This textbook is written to meet the needs of teaching and training talents for specialties related to the conservation and revitalization of cultural heritage. There are 13 chapters in the book. Chapters 1 to 5 cover topics such as the conservation philosophy of cultural heritage, a general understanding on the material properties and deterioration causes of various historic built materials from the chemical and physical aspects, the scientific methods of documentation, the application of commonly used and performance-enhanced repair materials, etc. Chapters 6 to 13 describe the various characteristics, deterioration causes, types of repair materials, conservation design methods, and representative case studies of important historic built materials such as wood, earth, stone, brick, concrete, plaster, painted murals. Each chapter strives to be comprehensive and precise, reinforcing the scientific process from recognizing the historical built materials, understanding the material pathology to finding the suitable repair materials and conservation techniques.
