《一千零一夜》，又称《天方夜谭》，是阿拉伯人民在历经几百年共同创作、搜集、加工提炼和编纂而成的一部很好的民闻故事集，由大小不一、情节各异的两百多个神话传说、魔法故事、民间传说和寓言故事构成。它是一部以浪漫主义的手法反映现实生活的文学巨著，其中的故事充满了神秘的东方色彩和情调。“渔夫的故事”、“阿里巴巴和四十大盗”、“阿拉丁和神灯”、“牧羊人的故事”、“辛巴达航海历险记”、“狐狸和狼的故事”等脍炙人口的故事，以其引人入胜的情节、奇妙的想象、通俗的语言、浓烈的生活气息和鲜明的阿拉伯特色，伴随了一代又一代人的美丽童年、少年直至成年。
    它被译成世界上一百多种文字，而其中的英文版本更是不计其数，本书选用的是很有名的英文版本之一。无论作为语言学习的课本，还是作为通俗的文学读本，对当代中国的大、中、小学生都将产生积极的影响。为了使读者能够了解英文故事概况，进而提高阅读速度和阅读水平，在每篇英文传说故事的开始部分增加了中文导读。
