威廉·拉波夫，威廉·拉波夫教授，著名语言学家，社会语言学主要创始人。1927年出生，1964年于哥伦比亚大学获博士学位，导师为著名语言学家Uriel Weinreich教授。1971年至今一直在宾州大学语言学系任教。并任Language Variation and Change期刊主编。获瑞典Uppsala大学、加拿大York大学、英国Edinburgh大学荣誉学位、美国语言学会“萨丕尔教授”称号，1996年本书获美国语言学会“布龙菲尔德奖”。
拉波夫教授是世界公认的语言学大师，他不仅在历史语言学及普通语言学理论方面做出了贡献，而且在语音学、实验语音学等学科也做出了巨大的成绩。其主要论著有：The Social Stratification fo English in New York City（1966）、Therapeutic Discourse（1976）、The Study of Non-Standard English （1970）、Sociolinguistic Patterns（1972）、Language in the Inner City（1972）、What Is a Linguistic Fact?（1977）、Locating Language in time and Space（主编）（1980）、Principles of Linguistic Change．Volume 1:Internal Factors（1994）、Principles of Linguistic change．Volume 2:Social Factors（2000）、Studies in Sociolinguistics（2001）、Atlas of North American English: Phonology and Sound Change（2006）等。
因其瞩目的成就，拉波夫教授1979年当选为美国国家艺术与科学院（National Academy of Arts and Sciences，NAAS）院士，1993年当选为美国国家科学院（National Academy of Sciences，NAS）院士、1997年入选美国科学促进会（American Association for the Advance of Science，AAAS），1979年任美国语言学会（LSA）主席。
