斯特恩教授的研究大多集中在欧洲思想史方面，涉及1789年后欧洲的政治文化、1740年后的德国历史、第一次世界大战史、19世纪欧洲思想中的反资产阶级的心理仇恨、法西斯主义的文化起源、1870年后的帝国主义以及编史学，有多本著作问世。如：《文化绝望的政治》（The Politics of Cultural Despair）（1961）、《权力的责任》（The Responsibility of Power）（1967）、《非自由主义的失败——现代德国政治文化论文集》（The Failure of Illiberalism, Essays in the Political Culture of Modern Germany）（1972）、《金与铁：俾斯麦、布莱希罗德与德意志帝国的建立》（Gold and Iron: Bismarck, Bleichrder,and the Building of the German Empire）（1977）、《梦想与错觉：德国历史的戏剧》（Dreams and Delusions: The Drama of German History）（1988），以及这本《爱因斯坦恩怨史》（Einsteins German World）（1999）。
从1984年起，斯特恩成为《爱因斯坦全集》编委会和执委会成员。
