《小学英语阅读强化训练 五年级下》与《义务教育教科书英语（PEP）》同步，阅读水平略高于《义务教育英语课程标准》二级的要求。该书既可作为教师课堂教学内容的补充，又可作为学生课后阅读能力提升的强化训练材料。
该书在阅读内容的选编上与教材单元主题相配合，每单元6篇阅读材料，复习单元4篇阅读材料。材料内容长短兼顾，难易结合。基于学生的认知水平、生活经验、兴趣爱好，材料以精彩生动的对话、故事、短文、歌谣及谜语为主，并配有有趣易懂的插图、小小词库和参考答案，以此激发学生的阅读兴趣，帮助学生更好地理解文本，培养学生自主阅读能力。
