Chen Junyu (1917-2012) was born in Tianjin,ancestral home Anqing, Anhui province. Chenstudied at the Department of Horticulture, NankingUniversity, where he earned a Bachelor' sdegree of Agriculture in 1940 and a Master'sdegree of Agriculture in 1943. He obtained thedegree of Master of Science, Horticulture at theRoyal Veterinary and Agricultural University,Copenhagen in 1950. In educational and scientificcareer, he had served successively as a lecturerof Sichuan University, an associate professorof Fudan University and associate professor ofWuhan University, a professor of HuazhongAgricultural College (now Huazhong AgriculturalUniversity), a professor and doctoral supervisor ofBeijing Forestry University. He was elected as anAcademician of Chinese Academy of Engineeringin 1997. He was authorized as the internationalsenior registrar for mei (Prunus mume) by theInternational Society for Horticultural Science in1998. More than 400 papers and 10 books wereissued by him. He won the First Award of Sci-Tech Progress of the Forestry Ministry and theThird Award of National Sci-Tech Progress byChina Mei Flower Cultivars in Colour (1989), theFirst Award of Sci-Tech Progress of the ForestryMinistry and the Second Award of NationalSci-Tech Progress by "the Establishment ofthe Gene Pools and the Study on PropagationTechniques for the Germplasm Resources ofYellow Camellia" , the Second Award of Sci-Tech Progress of the Construction Ministry byChina Flower Book (by Chen and Cheng Xukeas editors-in-chief), the First Award of ExcellentSci-Tech Book Prize of General Administrationof Press and Publication by China AgriculturalEncyclopaedia: Vol. Ornamental Horticulture. Hewon the China Ornamental Horticulture LifetimeAchievement Award and Chinese Society ofLandscape Architecture Lifetime AchievementAward in 2011, the China Mei and WintersweetLifetime Achievement Award in 2012. In 2013,he was awarded posthumously the International Rooftop Landscape Lifetime Achievement Award.
