进入21世纪以来，卫星重力的发展被认为是大地测量学领域在继GPS（全球定位系统）后的又一次革命性进步。尤其是低轨重力卫星计划GRACE的成功实施，为研究地球重力场时空变化提供了丰富的观测数据，给地球物理学、大地测量学、水文学和冰川学等领域带来了勃勃生机。极地的战略地位显得越发重要，然而中国对极地的研究尚少。鉴于此，《Mass variations of polar ice sheet observed from space》重点介绍了目前从GRACE观测数据里提取出地球表面质量迁移信号的主流方法（mascon：mass concentration）的关键技术，包括*优的参数化方法、基于Tikhonov的时空约束、观测数据的方差协方差矩阵等，并跟国际主流单位（美国宇航局喷气推进实验室NASA-JPL、戈达德飞行中心）的产品做出详细的分析比较。更重要的是，《从太空观测格陵兰冰盖的质量平衡（英文版）》将对近十年来北极冰川的质量变化做出准确全面的评估，可以服务于国家目前准备开发的“冰上丝绸之路”-北极航道（“一带一路”海上合作路线）。
