刘辉编著的《大学英语综合学习教程（1）》立足于北京第二外国语学院校本特色及现实，以近代经典及现代非常不错的真实材料为来源，以对自然世界、对社会及对自己的认知和理解为线索，形成独特的叙事结构和风格，为老师和学生打造出足够的想象和创造空间。教材突破语言中心的樊篱，基于语言又超越语言，通过语言来丰富思想、拓展思维、发展情感、培养道德。本教材在一定程度上关注中国本土文化，增加中国文化与外国文化对比的内容，在提高学生的文化意识的同时帮助他们提高跨文化交际能力，成为合格的世界公民。本教材为系列教材当中的一本，主要针对一、二年级非英语专业本科生。本册教材共12单元，每单元由课前、课上、课后三个部分组成。课前学生需要阅读文章并完成相关信息材料的查询、收集和整理工作；课上学生在老师的指导下完成语言、阅读理解等练习并进行主题相似或对比文章的阅读和思考等扩展性活动；课后学生独自或合作完成进阶练习任务并开展深入阅读。经过学习本教材，学生们能够提高问题意识，并能够根据问题进行思考、批判和总结，同时培养自主学习能力和合作精神，在获取语言知识的同时各方面能力都能有所提升。
