    帝王的降生总是充满神异，但秦王朝似乎还来不及为秦始皇的出生抹上一道神话色彩，帝国就崩溃了。因此，这一回，皇帝的降临显得有些普通。
    秦始皇的父亲是秦国的王子，名叫子楚。起初，子楚作为秦国的人质留居在赵国。战国时期，诸侯国之间战争频繁，两国之间为了结盟，便互派王室成员作为人质抵押到对方国家。通常来说，人质在他国会受到优待，但是，一旦本国违背盟约，人质就会面临生命的危险。
    子楚在赵国的境遇并不好。秦国与赵国多次交战，子楚不断受到牵连。尤其是公元前260年，秦国攻打韩国，韩国人投降了赵国，于是秦兵进攻赵国。在一个叫做长平的地方大战一场，赵军失败，有四十多万人被杀。不久，秦军又围攻赵国都城邯郸。在这种情形下，作为人质的子楚无疑要遭到赵人的憎恨，根本谈不上什么优厚的待遇。秦国所给的资助很少，子楚的生活很好清贫。
    当时，有一位魏国的大商人吕不韦，因做生意来往于各国的都市。在邯郸，他看到了穷困落魄的子楚，很好怜惜，自言自语说：“此奇货可居。”意思是说，物以稀为贵，难得的东西正可以投资经营。在子楚身上，吕不韦看到了一个可以获利无穷的投资机会，更看到了自己的远大前程。
    他问父亲：“耕田种地，能得到多少利润？”
    父亲回答：“十倍。”
    “经营珠宝，能得到多少利润？”
    “百倍。”
    “扶助王子登上王位，能得到多少利润？”
    “无数。”
    吕不韦说：“现在耕田种地，辛苦劳作，还不能求得温饱。
