教材突出“成人、业余、实用”外，强调教师、学生实际水平及“三级考试”的针对性。新版教材的结构在原教材的基础上做适当调整。各单元(Unit)增加听力(Listening)版块，围绕课文（Text）、阅读（Reading）,参照《考纲》的有关内容,设计听力练习（“多项选择”）。样题(Sample Texts)含的项目应包括《考纲》所列的五个项目：Listening- Dialogue Completions（会话技能）；Reading Comprehension（阅读理解）；Vocabulary and Structure （词汇和语法）；Close Test（完型填空）；Writing（短文写作）及有关省市三级考试所含的Identification（挑错）和Translation（翻译）。
