本书回顾了美国汉语教 学的历史以及过去二十年 美国的语言教学情况，并 提供了一个针对美国中小 学汉语教学的课程大纲。 本书一共分为六章。第一 章讨论2009年起在美国各 州开始推行的共同核心标 准，回顾美国近年来的语 言教学史，在此基础上进 一步探讨了始于二十世纪 九十年代的涉及各个学科 的教学标准运动。Dowd博 士与时俱进，聚焦ACTFL 最新的世界语言学习标准 ，对每条标准进行举例说 明，给出了相应的表现指 标和能力描述，并将 ACTFL的核心教学实践与 STARTALK六项原则相结 合。本章最后还将Wiggins & McTighe的倒序设计引入 外语教学实践，指出外语 学习是21世纪的一项重要 技能。第二章介绍美国的 汉语教学史。汉语教学是 伴随传承学校进入美国学 校体系的，由此才有了如 今公立学校的汉语课程以 及STARTALK汉语夏令营 。美国大学理事会和亚洲 协会对汉语语言教育给予 了大力支持。有了这些支 持，以犹他州为代表的许 多州的学校才开始有了沉 浸式汉语课程。本章最后 还提到如何将科技、工程 学、数学等运用到语言课 堂。第三章聚焦美国外语 教育测试，并逐一介绍与 中文相关的各项考试。第 四章简要讨论课程计划与 教案设计，并提供了一个 教案范例。第五章和第六 章为汉语教师提供了一个 汉语教学课程纲要，其中 第五章为1-6年级大纲，第 六章为7-11年级大纲。纲 要中列出的词汇、语法点 与汉办2014年版《国际汉 语通用课程大纲》进行了 对照。本书是美国汉语教 学的一次回顾，其提供的 汉语课程大纲对未来美国 汉语教学实践也具有一定 的参考价值。
