A FAREWELL TO ARMS, a semi-autobiographical novel, works on
twoliterary levels. First, it is a story concerningthe drama and
passion of a doomed romancebetween Henry and a British
nurse,Catherine Barkley. Second, it also skillfullycontrasts the
meaning of personal tragedyagainst the impersonal destruction
wroughtby the First World War.
In 1998, the Modern Library ranked AFarewell to Arms on its
list of the 100 bestEnglish-language novels of the 20th century. It
was first adapted to film in 1932, withfurther versions in the
following decades.
