约翰·亨利·纽曼出生于1801年2月21日，在一个温和的新教圣公会家庭中长大。1817年6月他进入牛津大学三一学院，1820年取得学士学位，并在两年后成为牛津大学奥列尔学院的特别研究员，这种待遇在当时的大学里是很不寻常的。纽曼在1824．年被授予英国国教会的圣职，4年后他成为牛津太学教会圣玛丽教区的牧师，任职至1843年。在此期间他出版了1O卷布道集。 从1833年起，纽曼开始和其他与牛津大学有关的教士一起发表《时代书册》。这些书册试图探索英国国教会的独立之道，这些作者认为，自1832年改革法案通过以来，这种独立就被政府的不适当的介入所剥夺。“书册运动”，或称“牛津运动”，在19世纪30年代造就了一批运动分子。作为其中一员，纽曼越来越为罗马天主教会所吸引。纽曼在第90号“书册”(出版于1841年)中争辩说，圣公会教士可以在相信许多通常与罗马天主教相关联的教义的同时，继续光明正大地服务于英国国教会。大学当局立即谴责了第90号书册，在后来的几年里，圣公会主教们也对它进行了批判。1843年纽曼辞去了圣玛丽教区的职务，1845年10月他被罗马天主教会接受。在改宗的同一年他出版了《论基督教教义的发展》一书。
